Hujambo! Welcome to the official website of the Sankofa Festival of Florence, SC. This year's festival will be held on Friday and Saturday, June 26th and 27th.
HERITAGE IN MOTION is the theme for this year's festival, which will celebrate the African influence on modern dance.
We have an exciting lineup of performers and presenters for you to enjoy this year. In keeping with our theme, our featured performers will be the ADANDE DRUM AND DANCE CO. from Charleston, SC, which will offer two afternoon African dance and drum performances on Saturday. Also, on Saturday afternoon, come and enjoy a "histo-musical" presentation from QUEEN QUET of St. Helena Island, SC, Chieftess of the Gullah-Geechee Nation.
Also performing will be the exciting reggae band TRUE CONCEPT of Charleston, THE JUSTINE ROBERTS PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY dance groups, and inspirational gospel singers, the HICKS SISTERS of Lamar.
The Sankofa Festival will open on Friday evening, June 26, with a Juneteenth Lecture featuring DR. BURNETTE GALLMAN of the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilization of Columbia, SC, at Florence-Darlington Technical College.
Dr. Gallman's and Queen Quet's presentations are sponsored by The SC Humanities Council, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities; inspiring, engaging and enriching South Carolinians with programs on literature, history, culture and heritage.
